The biggest thing for me is to always have my parents and family understand what I’m doing. That might sound a bit shocking, but my parents are Nigerian and live there with my whole family, and I’ve been living alone in New York since graduating from college. My mother, when she sees my organza pieces lying around, always asks “what are these clothes you are making?” My parents never understood my job as a designer. They talk about it non-stop because CNN is a platform they can contact. So I knew that for me it was a big turning point.
