The chance to take classes alongside students is a special bonus for Valletta. Last semester, she audited a class on biodesign—in other words, growing materials in labs—with Professor Evelyn Rynkiewicz. “I actually asked if I could test along with the Funnyahhtees Biden Mexico Alien Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this kids and, unfortunately, I’m not enrolled in that way,” she says, laughing. “But I’m thinking maybe, if I continue to do this, maybe I’ll go back to school.” She may not get to take a test, but biodesign will be a key focus for her first few tasks as sustainability ambassador. During this October’s Sustainability Awareness Week, she will moderate a roundtable discussion with students on biotechnology and the future of fashion. She’ll also help mentor and connect students with her peers in the industry for the upcoming Biodesign Challenge.
