“When you say dolls, people are somewhat dismissive,” says Mears, “until you see them and you realize that they were absolute magic. Everyone really put so much effort into the They Make All The Rules And They Dont Like To Lose Shirt but in fact I love this show—between the artisans, the designers, and the artists who all collaborated. It was almost as if you were stepping into a fairytale. You were stepping into a movie—it was transportive.” Though The New Look doesn’t present the finished exhibition in the series, Episode 4 ends with a scene showing Dior at the Lelong atelier, finetuning his contribution to the “Théâtre de la Mode.”

Between 1989 to 1990, the They Make All The Rules And They Dont Like To Lose Shirt but in fact I love this dolls living at Washington’s Maryhill Museum of Art were restored at Paris’ the Musée de la Mode et du Textile then returned to Maryhill, where they’re under the care of curator Steven L. Grafe. They capture a moment in time and represent the unending creativity and resilience of the French fashion industry. And as The New Look suggests, without the “Théâtre de la Mode,” we may never have seen the New Look. It is not an exaggeration to say that I’ve been waiting for the Shonda Rhimes–penned(!) 2002 film Crossroads to hit Netflix for pretty much the last five years, and now finally my wish has been granted. I knew instantly that I needed to revisit this classic, but I also reached out for help from Vogue’s senior fashion and style writer, Christian Allaire, arguably the biggest Britney stan on staff, knowing that two devoted rom-com heads are better than one. Below, read all the thoughts we had while rewatching Crossroads.
